About the Artist
Jos Prol (b. 1985) is a Brooklyn based artist who works through the mediums of painting and sculpture. His work explores the structure and meaning of nature with a particular fascination in where its borders lay in relation to human creation. He draws inspiration from the waters of the Gowanus Canal, horticulture of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and landscape management of Prospect Park, creating images and forms that compare synthetic with organic.
Currently, Jos is creating a series of sculptures using driftwood salvaged from Gowanus Bay, carved and painted with pixelated precision, giving them faces to converse with the urban density of their arrival destination. He is also producing a series of paintings, titled ‘datascapes’: abstract simulations of natural processes represented through hyper-structured yet un-patterned fields of dense color.
Educated as an architect, with years of experience in structural engineering and building, Jos is also deeply connected to nature. He approaches his work with questions about what defines the distinctions and borders and invites viewers to see themselves as more connected and part of nature than traditional sensibilities would seem to suggest.
