A solo exhibition by Maya Varadaraj

Curated by Yvena Despagne

About the exhibition

Established Gallery is pleased to present Tangled in Femme, a solo exhibition by Maya Varadaraj. Growing up in the southern town of Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu, India, Varadaraj's upbringing and experience in a primarily male-dominated society and their history against Indian women, has influenced her creative process with thought-provoking visual work. In this exhibition, Varadaraj intentionally shifts the viewer’s perception and understanding of the world around them. Varadaraj is invested in the study and use of material culture, expressing scenarios through narrative installations that combine objects and 2D work.

This exhibition will run from February 5 - March 1, 2021.

*Due to COVID restrictions and the health and safety of our community Established Gallery will have public hours open Fridays and Saturdays between 12-6pm. About the Artist

Maya Varadaraj's is an interdisciplinary artist and designer. Her work is largely influenced by her upbringing in India; exposure to disparities of race class and gender without identifying with traditions that informed them. Her practice brings to light the unproductivity and violence perpetuated by enforced decorum for women presenting through paintings,  collages, and mixed media installations.

Varadaraj both honors and disrupts traditional Indian techniques of image making, dislodging figures from domesticity and liberating their characters from prescribed decorum. She finds objects and their ability to drive behaviour fascinating. In doing so she sheds light on the increased violence towards women in India, and the complexity of womanhood universally. Her aim is to tackle these current issues of and address the violence perpetrated by cultural conditioning through material culture.
